"So the supply and demand thing is working?" MajorSteve: It ALWAYS works. Some folks just would prefer it didn't.

I think this article is EXTREMELY MISLEADING. Like white_fang mentions, I believe they're only talking about already-refined gasoline, NOT crude oil (or even petroleum).
We consume over 20 million barrels of petroleum per day (the equivalent of about 9.5 million barrels of gasoline). Of that 20 million, we import 12 million barrels of petroleum each day (or 5.5 millions barrels of gasoline, much greater than the 1 million barrels this article is talking about).
So, the way I see it, we'd still be importing a boatloads of petroleum, but refining it here and "exporting" gasoline. BFD.

How is it that we will become an exporter of something we're importing cause we don't have as much as we need for our own use ? Isn't that the reason our gas prices are where they are ? Or is it those darn speculators, again ?

they're mixing "crude oil" & "gasoline" just to try to give Americans some hope..
big difference in exporting gasoline, and exporting oil.. and besides.. it's not gonna happen..

This is just a case scenario. When will this actually happen? Not in 2010, maybe 2020.

First they need to address the cost to the North American consumer - THEN think about exporting!

That's a laughing point...our "OLD" refineries can not even keep up with current demand. Even with improvements with existing refineries..."we" have not built a NEW refinery for over 30 years!

If we're flush with gasoline that means supply is up and pump prices should continue down.

So what would be wrong with the US being a world processor of crude oil into gasoline? The chemical industry has been one of the bright spots in foreign trade. Chemicals have consistantly been one of the places where the US has been a net exporter and regularly helps with our trade imbalance.

If we really become big into Alternative fuels, then yes, we should use our refining capacity to make gasoline, and then export it. No sense just letting these multi Billion $ refineries sit idel.
But it would take a major shift away from gasoline to things like Air, electric, Hydrogen.... Right now there are not a lot of alternatives on the market. So 2010 is way too optimistic.

'US Could Become a Net Exporter of Gasoline' by 2010.... Great! More profits for big oil.
But they may be exporting bio fuels and 'a move to non-oil based vehicles in Western countries.' Maybe more renewable energies and electric vehicles........
