House bill to offer $1 billion for 100-mpg cars

Autoweek -- Dan Lungren lives in Gold River, an unincorporated community outside of Sacramento, Calif., that wants desperately not to be seen as part of its undesirable neighbor Rancho Cordova--despite the fact that most in the area who don't live there see it as a community of confused, affluent people who like to pretend they don't live in Rancho Cordova.

Lungren, in his capacity as the U.S. representative for California's 3rd District, also wants to offer one of the Detroit Three a billion dollars. A billion dollars? For the auto industry? From a Republican? Ah, but there's a catch!

Lungren's proposed legislation stipulates that the money will go to the first U.S.-incorporated automaker that can sell 60,000 gasoline-powered cars that get more than 100 mpg. The bill, H.R. 3872,...

I'm still content with my 16 year old Metro @ 50 mpg. Can't pass anything except mopeds & gas stations, but in two more years I'll take it to vote.

Well, those 69 MPG Fords over in Europe meet European emission standards which if anything are more strict.

You don't get them here because we don't go for roller skates that are labeled as cars. One of my former co-workers went to Europe and brought back pictures of European cars. They were about as high as his five-year-old daughter was tall, in fact he took more than one picture showing the comparison.

FWIW, the vehicle that won the mainstream category in the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize got 110 MPG. On E-85.

Lungren, if this is such a good idea, you should be able to corral enough philanthropists who are willing and eager, out of their own big hearts (and own deep pockets), to contribute to a pool of non-taxpayer money to reward the first US-incorporated automaker who can successfully market a 100-mpg car.

In other words, Lungren, keep your hands out of MY pocket for YOUR boneheaded idea!

That is a great idea carrollcreek . As you stated it would take the MFG's to make it and consumers to pony up $$$ to get it too.
But with our dimwit thinking CONgress and Senate people it probably won't happen.

.
But is this real consumer driving mileage, EPA Estimate, or HONDA MILEAGE?!

This article is funny because the reason we don't already have 100MPG cars is BECAUSE of Congress! Ford already has cars driving all over Europe that get 69 MPG, but Congress will not let them be imported or built her!. If you take the anti-smog junk off my Expedition and re-map the computer to optimize fuel mileage, I get a third more mileage.

Do you know why you haven't seen a car over heat in traffic in the last 15 years? Its because the engine computer riches up the fuel mixture when the vehicle is idling or about to overheat which cools down the engine with unburnt gasoline! This is why your vehicle has a catalytic convertor, to burn gasoline that makes it past the engine. And the reason cat convertors are so hot all the time is they are constantly burning unused gasoline! All because the EPA and Congress mandated this to the Auto Industry all in the name of air quality. If we had proper highways without congestion, there would be no reason for smog equipment to be robbing us of a third of our mileage!

By the way, the Oil Companies don't want 100 MPG cars which is why Standard Oil gave Chrysler $20 Million to buy the Prague Carburetor for 10 Million Dollars and shelve it.

Additionally if the EPA and Congress were not so rigid and backward thinking, they would allow vehicle computers to advance timing and lean out the mixture to maximize fuel economy once a vehicle is over 40 MPH for 3 minutes. Even a badly tuned 1972 Camaro hardly pollutes when it going 55MPH!

I wonder who will be the first to print stickers saying their cars will go over 100 mpg and collect this $1 billion? The government would certainly be stupid enough to pay out the money - especially if there was a kick back involved.

Moredleg, you are absolutely correct. To add to that, we would also need a car that is reliable and safe. Doesn't do much good to have a 100mpg car if its unreliable. My car buying is based mostly on gas mileage and reliability.

Isint California on the verge of insolvency, Now I wonder why. If a car company could sell 60,000 gas powered vehicles that get 100 MPG, the govt wouldnt have to pony up the $$$, the market would. (See Chevy Volt disucssion)

Even in today's world, $1B sounds big. Does anyone remember the per car incentives given at taxpayer expense to get electric vehicles on the road? I'm betting that it is much bigger than the $1,667 per car of this proposal.

With the price of gas going up, the incentive should be there for us citizens. Instead of giving the automakers all of the incentive, they should state that half the incentive will go to them (so they build it) and the other half would go to the consumers that purchased it (up to the first 100,000 cars). The money could be used to pay off the cars or do something else.

That would do both things, get the auto makers to make the vehicles and get the consumers to make that initial investment.
