Friends back in Philly have shared that several refineries are closing there.. costing several hundred jobs. The reason the refineries (as well as coal plants) are closing is due to more Gov't regulation.. and this is also one of the reasons the cost of gas has gone up. Along with less refineries, which means more transport expense, those regulations also increase the cost of production. Say Thank you Obama.. (ack) He really has missed the boat on how to be the president.. and when he ran fussing about the economy and gas prices what has he done? he has reduced jobs, stunted the economy, businesses are closing, and gas prices have skyrocketed.. with gas prices all products & food prices also skyrocket. What has he done for us? Short answer he has done everything AGAINT us!

"The U.S. has not built an oil refinery in over 30 years." True, but...
Added capacity of 23 of today's average size facilities since the low in 1985.

To: eomc17 Re: Apr 14, 2012 10:37:45 PM ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The reason that we elected BO is because of his predecessor and the policies of the one who was to carry his mantle. As is typical every election cycle, we get to choose between "Tweedledee" and "Tweedledum". You might recall of the perennial candidate on the Socialist Party ticket when he quit running and was asked "why". His reply was that "Both Parties have adopted my platform." And it is true. Both major Parties are taking US over the cliff, albeit only at different rates.
And for whom can you vote for President who would be essentially different from BO? Romney? Santorum? Gingrich? All three have records of BIGGER government, deficits, taxes, etc. The ONLY candidate who has a track record of NEVER voting for a tax increase or unbalanced budget is Congressman Ron Paul. He is virtually being ignored, marginalized, or vilified by the (Establishment) media, yet he attracts THOUSANDS at his gatherings (Ten thousand at UCLA, but you probably haven't heard).
I think that there will be many disappointed voters this fall who have adopted the mindset "Anyone, But Obama".

Losing a million dollars per day cannot be fun and it is a wonder that these haven't shut down sooner. This might be an oversimplification of the problem, but if it costs more to refine the tar sands oil in these refineries, why doesn't Sunoco and ConocoPhillips raise their prices to make this venture profitable? If they shut down their refineries, the ensuing shortages in supply will cause prices to escalate anyhow.
It wasn't stated anywhere in this article, but I would imagine that modernizing these facilities might be cost prohibitive because of the environmental regulations. If such is the case, wouldn't it make more sense to abolish the EPA altogether and relax the standards in order to bring more refined gas products to the northeast?

eomc17, "It's time for a change I can believe in in November and for the first time ever, I am not voting for a democrat. Obama is a power hungry socialist, not democratic by any means.
He ignores what the public really wants, he tells half-truths and lies every time he speaks, he takes credit for things he has nothing to do with, and always blames other for anything that doesn't go his way.
Did we vote Dennis the Menace into the White House?? Perhaps....." ======================= I'm hearing the same from a lot of folk who voted for this epic failure of a President in 2008.

For big oil and reckless speculators, enough is NEVER enough. And Obama let's us spend our life savings to buy way overpriced gasoline. It's time for a change I can believe in in November and for the first time ever, I am not voting for a democrat. Obama is a power hungry socialist, not democratic by any means.

Backwards baltimore gets it completely wrong "Conveniently, since we're in an election year and the extreme right wants to make gas prices an issue, whereas in 2008 it faded out of sight before the conventions."
=====================
Complete BULL FECES, the average price for regular gasoline was $3.65 on Sept 8, the week after the Dem convention and the week of the Rep convention.
But facts never get in the way of liberal thought do they?2008 Sept prices

As long as the prices in your area are among the highest, they will be no shortages.

We don't have no gas shortage. Unless they plan a gas storage and jack the price up.
You hear this United States Government, a planned shortage so gas prices go up. What do you plan to do about it?
.... ... ... .... ... nothing... ... ...
Obama, I'm disappointed. I thought you were for the people, not take away from the people. DO SOMETHING!

As always, the chickens come home to roost.
As always, the politicians will blame the people who work productively for the betterment of everyone in return for a profit. The politicians will say the refiners should have stayed in business and eaten the losses incurred by government regulations. To do otherwise makes them "greedy".
As always, people too caught up in watching the drek they're served on TV will not be able to bother themselves with engaging their brains and will instead listen and repeat the baloney the politicians spout for their benefit.
Life goes on as always.
