I keep all of my colonies in full sun. You can put colonies in a full shade spot, but over a long time, they might tend to be more defensive than a colony which is in full sun (at least that is what experience taught us here in Illinois). It is ok for them to be shaded in the later part of the day, but a mostly sunny location is preferred. If the bees have a water supply (creek, pond, water pan, etc), they will be able to regulate the temperature to their preference.
